Make Yourself

I’m hesitant to post anything that could be construed as life-coaching on this blog because, you know, it’s not like I’m the perfect human or anything. I don’t have all the answers, people.

I know. You’re surprised.

ANYWHOO.

I am, however, interested in trying to better myself. In the lead up to my wedding in May I realized that I was spending a lot of time doing mundane things (reading sports blogs, playing on my phone) that weren’t really rewarding. And I was also feeling like the valuable things that I wanted to do (reading books, writing fiction) were going undone. So over the last few months I’ve made a conscious effort to better use my time. So far, I think it’s going pretty well. I’ve got this site, at least, to show for my efforts.

But I didn’t write this to tell you about how great I am for overcoming…um, I don’t know, my own self-inflicted laziness? No. I wrote this to tell you about this article. It’s a short piece by David Wong – maybe the best of the fine stable of writers over at Cracked.com – and it basically codifies the principals that I’ve been trying to live by of late. In a post about making the best use of your time, I’ll give you a minute to read that article – it’s worth it. [Really, I’ll wait…Okay. Welcome back.] If you followed Wong’s advice and made your own list, your own real philosophy of life, then that list is who you are. For better or worse, what does it say about you? What does mine say about me?

We are what we do. It’s so simple, so obvious, and so completely forgotten 99% of the time. It’s not easy to make yourself into the person you want to be, and no one will do it for you. But it’s worth doing. Or at least trying to do.

Wish me luck.
