Material Anticipation

It may be that I’ve talked music with the Brothers Dye more than I’ve talked about…anything else with…anyone else. Yeah. That sounds about right.

So when I was in the car with Matt over last weekend, we talked about music a lot. A. Lot. And as is often the case, Matt recommended a bunch of ridiculously awesome bands that I had never heard of before. Obviously I had to buy some new records when I got home, which means that I now get to look forward to a smattering of CDs popping up in my mail over the coming days.

And it’s entirely possible that the album I’m most excited to receive is Material Me by Tilian. Currently the singer for Dance, Gavin, Dance, Tilian Pearson has a special place in my heart from his time as the frontman for Tides of Man. I had no idea that he had released a solo album last year but now that I know about it, I’m very excited to hear it.

I can’t say that I know much about Material Me besides that it exists. My listening history with the record is limited to a couple of iTunes previews, although I did pick up Tilian’s single ‘Future Friends’ and that’s been enjoyable. To say that his solo material (electronica/pop) is very different from Pearson’s full-band output (post-hardcore) is a vast understatement. I suppose it’s possible that such a drastic stylistic change could prove detrimental, but I’m not counting on it. I was a singer once and musically I still live and die by melodies; as Material Me promises to have quite a few good ones, I’m not too worried about the change in sonic scenery.

Looks like I’ll have a lot of listening to do this weekend.
