A long time ago my musician father taught me that there are two kinds of great bands: great live bands and great studio bands. Being one doesn’t necessarily imply or prohibit the other. But when a band is both, it’s worth celebrating.
Sometimes it’s that easy.
So when BQDC’s spirit-animal-turned-band Gates came through Detroit on Friday, of course I was there, hanging out with friends and family, laughing at old stories and telling new jokes and, not least of all, rocking the eff out.

My love of Gates’ studio work is well documented and I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that their live performances are equally impressive. If you like this band or you just like live music in general, this is absolutely a tour that you should make an effort to see.
Sometimes it’s that easy.
